Carnation

The name Dianthus (‘godlike flower’ is derived from the Greek dios – ‘god’ and athos - flower) was given to this plant in the old days. It is believed that its ‘godfather’ was Teophastus, a Greek scientist of the 3rd century BC.

It is that rear flower the meaning of which is so contradictory. Red carnation is a symbol of courage, triumph of the just case, and it is a flower of revolutionary changes. At the same time it symbolises bond, pure love and faithfulness. The carnation is a flower of the victorious soldier and of the young bride. It embodies hot summer and rough beauty of alpine rocks.

Since the old times the carnation symbolised Christ’s crucifixion. The bright red Cartesian carnation is often depicted at pictures with Madonna with an infant. In the Renaissance portraits it symbolises engagement and in still life – short duration of life. The carnation woven in ancient Arabic carpets depicts happiness. However, during the French Revolution the king’s supporters, who were executed, decorated their dress with this flower. At the time it was known as ‘the carnation of horror’.

This beautiful flower became famous owing to the development of the flower arrangement art. Its masters demonstrated to the entire world that the carnation can be beautiful alone and in combination with other flowers, in unusual and moving compositions and wedding bouquets. Nowadays we are happy to see the carnation to turn from a revolutionary symbol into a flower of exquisite elegance.

If you would like to find out more about carnations in catalogues issued abroad or in the Internet please note that in English it has several names. Garden flowers are known as ‘Carnation’, and although this name is being gradually replaced by ‘gillyflower’, the former is used more widely in specialised literature.
