Strelitzia belongs to the family of strelitzia, which is related to the banana family. It
is a perennial grassy plant with two layers of long leaves. Flowers are in ear
inflorescence, of irregular shape and bright colour. Five varieties grow in South
Africa. S. reginae is grown in greenhouses; there are S. nicolai and S. augusta in
botanical gardens. Its flowers are bright orange with a blue corona. In greenhouses strelitzia is grown for cutting. It is in blossom from October till May. As a house plant strelitzia blossoms in spring for several weeks. It blossoms only in good conditions, with lots of fresh air, bright light, but not too much sun, with moderate watering and water spraying of leaves. Additional fertilising with mineral and organic fertilisers is carried out from May until August three times a month. In September fertilising is terminated and watering becomes less generous. In winter stelitzia is kept inside in the temperature of 12-16 degrees with very limited watering. During this period the plant does not grow. A mature strelitzia can grow as high as 1- 1.3 meters if in a pot of 25 sm in diameter. To grow strelitzia go for a tall pot. The plant is propagated in spring by dividing the bush and by seeds. Strelitzia grown from seeds blossoms after 4-6 years, young plants usually have 6-8 leaves before blossoming. Young strelitzias are transplanted every spring (in March, April or May) in a substratum of turf, humus, leave ground and sand taken in the following proportion: 2:2:2:1, plus peat. There should be a good drainage in a pot. Strelitzia is transplanted with great care not to damage very delicate and fragile roots. Mature strelitzias are transplanted every 3-5 years. The upper layer of the ground should be replaced annually after blossoming. It is rather gardener friendly, usually it is not damaged by pests or diseases if looked after properly. In summer it is kept in the open air in a wind- and sun-protected place and subsequently the plant gives good blossoming. |
